As mothers, we are often pouring into everyone around us—our children, spouses, families, churches, workplaces, and communities.
Over time, we may become so accustomed to giving that we continue pouring even when our own cup is empty. But living continually depleted is not God’s system.
Before we can faithfully pour into others, we must allow God to pour into us. We need His Word, His presence, His wisdom, His strength, and the practical nourishment and support He provides. Caring for ourselves is not selfish; it is part of stewarding the life, body, and responsibilities God has entrusted to us.
Paul told Timothy to “take heed unto thyself” because what God developed within Timothy would also benefit those who heard him. God similarly told Abram, “I will bless thee…and thou shalt be a blessing.” Abram first received from God and then became a blessing to others.
Mothers are not meant to give endlessly from emptiness. God desires for us to continually return to Him, receive what we need, and pour into our families from a cup that He is filling.
